The Munchies

The munchies are real and they can be awesome if you’re prepared. When you’re high, food tastes better and you can eat more of it. Why not indulge? Just make sure you’re stuffing your face with healthy snacks. Forget pizza and ice cream; eat something that will lift your high to the next level. Here are three of my favorite snacks to munch on at home when I’m high. Each of these takes about 5 minutes to make and you can get the ingredients at any grocery store.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Balls (Tasty Option)

Tasty.

Ingredients (makes 2 servings)

  • Peanut Butter (Natural, 2 tablespoons)
  • Chocolate (90% pure, 2 squares)
  • Rolled oats (one handful)
  • Shredded Coconut (one handful)
  • Honey (1 tablespoon)
  • Flaxseeds (one handful)
  • Salt

Steps

  1. Mix peanut butter and honey with a spatula in a bowl.
  2. Add chocolate, rolled oats, shredded coconut, flaxseeds to the mix, stir.
  3. Lay out balls on a plate, shake some salt on top, put the plate into the freezer.
  4. Wait 10 minutes.
  5. Remove and eat.

Theory

This sweet/savory/salty delight will satisfy all of your carnal instincts. Putting it into the freezer for 10 minutes makes it even more awesome – the edge of the ball will be frozen and the center will still be warm. This contraposition of temperatures will play off of and enhance the sweet/savory distinction of the ingredients. The same can be said for the chocolate and salt. This is going to blow your mind, and depending on how high you are, knock you out for a few minutes.

Eat this if it’s nighttime, or you’re extra hungry and want some couch-lock bliss.

Orange-Purple-Green Smoothie (Healthy Option)

Healthy.

Ingredients (makes 2 servings)

  • Mango (remove pit, include rind)
  • Frozen Blueberries (one handful)
  • Cucumber (one mini)
  • Kale (two stalks)
  • Chard (two stalks)
  • Ginger
  • Matcha Green Tea (optional)

Steps

  1. Blend your mango, blueberries, cucumber on low until you have a liquid base.
  2. Add Kale, Chard, and matcha and blend on high for 1 minute, or until all the leafy green fibers have turned into a puree.
  3. Pour into a large shaker cup (remove the ball) and drink. Remember to rinse your blender before the residue dries.

Theory

The myrcene terpenes contributed by the mango will increase the rate at which THC passes through the blood-brain barrier. This means you’ll get even higher from the THC already circulating in your bloodstream. Blueberries contain phytonutrients and Kale contains Vitamin K and C. These superfoods will help you feel right as rain while high. Cucumber cools you down and generally tastes great in smoothies. Chard is just as good as kale, but blends a little more easily and tastes like a cross between spinach and rhubarb. The ginger will calm your stomach. It makes your organs feel good and spices up the bitter vegetables. Add matcha if you’re drinking this before 5:00 pm. You don’t want to mess with your sleep.

You should make this smoothie if you want something sweet and ridiculously healthy.

Yeasty Stovetop Popcorn (Shareable Option)

Yeasty.

Ingredients (makes 2 servings)

  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil (2 tablespoons)
  • Organic Flax Oil (2 tablespoons)
  • Popcorn Kernels
  • Nutritional Yeast Flakes
  • Salt

Steps

  1. Put a large pot on the stove, add oils.
  2. Turn stove to medium-high heat.
  3. Add 3 popcorn kernels. Once they pop, the oil is ready.
  4. Add the rest of the popcorn kernels, cover and let it sit.
  5. Your kernels will start popping. Remove the pot from the burner once it’s full.
  6. Pour the popcorn into a large bowl.
  7. Sprinkle salt and nutritional yeast on top.

Theory

Microwaveable popcorn is bad for you. It makes you feel awful. You’re going to get cancer and die if you eat it regularly. If you make your popcorn this way, it’s one of the healthiest, low-calorie snacks around. Doing it on the stove is quick and easy once you get the hang of it. And I find it pretty fun. The oil will naturally coat the popcorn kernels, so your salt will stick naturally. If you’ve never tried nutritional yeast before, you’re in for a treat. It’s basically nature’s cheese, and it’s packed with b-vitamins, keeping vegans and vegetarians fit and healthy. Try it out for yourself, compare how you feel, and you’ll never go back.
