Hemp for Healthy Skin
I can’t think of a plant more versatile than hemp. With a plethora of uses ranging from clothing to plastic substitutions, it has proven itself as one of the most multi-purposed, sustainable materials on the market.
My most recent discovery about hemp is its use as a beauty product. This finding has been nothing short of a miracle for me. After countless unsuccessful attempts to heal my unfaltering adult acne, I had really given up hope. I had tried everything from harsh over the counter skin drugs, to pro-active, to cutting out dairy. Nothing worked. Until I found hemp oil. The idea of using oil to heal acne (generally an oily skin problem) seemed absurd, but after looking into the vitamins and healthy fats in hemp’s rich oil I started to understand its true benefit for those looking to keep their skin healthy and glowing. Is my skin perfect? No. I still get monthly flair ups, and I’m dealing with scars. But hemp has made my skin immaculate compared to before.
Oral Hemp Oil
Hemp oil is full, full, full of vitamins and healthy fats. The most important of these (for skin at least) are omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These essential fats are required to maintain healthy nerves and cells, and to support brain function. Taking hemp oil orally can help the body absorb these omega fats from the inside out since our bodies don’t naturally produce them. Skin conditions such as dermatitis, psoriasis, and yes, even acne, have all been known to heal with the presence of omegas in the diet. These healthy fats are a crucial part of a well-balanced diet, and sadly a typical Western diet doesn’t provide nearly as much healthy fats as we require.
Hemp oil can be of benefit to you if you believe your acne is partially caused by hormonal imbalance. The oil is derived from the hemp seed, which is packed with gamma-linoleic acid. GLA is a great hormone regulator, so taking hemp both orally and topically can help get your hormones in check! It helps balance out your sebum levels and prevents sebum from hardening and clogging pores.
So! The first step in my healthy skin regime is taking an oral shot of hemp oil every morning. As we know, skin conditions start from the inside out. Start by taking your hemp oil and drinking a minimum of 3 liters of water a day.
Topical Hemp Oil
Using hemp oil topically can significantly improve the liveliness of your skin. You don’t have to have acne to start using hemp oil in your beauty regime. Especially in the winter months. It’s extremely moisturizing but has a comedogenic rating of 0. This means it has zero chance of clogging your pores. It’s essentially a God send for anyone with sensitive, acne-prone skin that also tends to get dry patches. It’s also an amazing moisturizer for those blessed with clear skin.
Hemp oil is super high in vitamins A and E, which are amazing for restoring and maintaining healthy skin. It can reduce sun spots, lighten up wrinkles, and help the diminishing of scars. It’s potent with antioxidants, which help fight cell damage while keeping the skin youthful and elastic. It’s basically a natural wrinkle cream in that respect.
Not Just For Skin
You’ll start to notice not just your skin, but your nails and hair get stronger also! Because of it’s high vitamin and mineral content, hemp oil taken orally will increase hair and nail growth. Taken topically it can add a nice shine to hair, help grow eyelashes, and smoothen out scars.
To get you started I’ve included a few of my favorite hemp-oil beauty recipes. The best part about them is they’re 100% natural, organic, and even edible. When I started to see skin as an organ that absorbs what I put on it, I started to understand the importance of natural products. My motto? If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.
Hemp & Honey Cleanser
This simple recipe is what I deem responsible for healing the majority of my acne. Raw manuka honey is an amazing addition to this cleanser. It is anti-inflammatory, relieves redness, and eliminates congestion in the pores. It can pull out bacteria by oxygenating the pores, making less room for acne to flare up. It also helps repair cell damage and promotes skin regeneration- bye bye scars.
Like hemp oil, rosehip oil has a high GLA and fatty acid content. It’s known to help fight aging due to its high profile of antioxidants. It’s soothing and gentle all while being loaded with vitamins A, C, and E. Oats are a great exfoliant as they’re gentle and won’t be too abrasive for sensitive skin. Oats are very moisturizing, leaving the skin feeling soft and supple. The oats can be messy so it’s okay to skip them if you’re in a hurry.
Directions: Mix all liquids together leaving out the oats. When you’re ready to cleanse simply drop some of the oats in the palm of your hand, and mix in part of your cleanser mixture. Next massage the face for 1-2 minutes. Really give yourself a nice mini facial, and help the blood circulate to the skin by massaging the most affected areas. Meanwhile, let the tap run on it’s hottest setting. Take a clean towel and drench it in the steaming water. Ring it out then place the towel over your whole face to steam it as you wipe off the cleanser. Your skin will feel clean and moisturized. For me, this is all I do in the morning and evening. I don’t add a moisturizer afterward as this feels moisturizing enough. If you feel you need more moisture, simply dollop a bit of hemp oil in the palm of your hand and massage it into your face!
Energizing Coffee & Hemp Body Scrub
This scrub is my go-to in the mornings. By exfoliating the skin you’re increasing circulation, which really helps to wake you up! Mix all the ingredients together and get scrubbing. Like previously mentioned, the gentle oats help to moisturize. The brown sugar is an added exfoliant, it helps slough off dead skin cells and rejuvenates the skin. Coffee has been known to help circulation and even diminish cellulite. The mixture smells sweet and delicious and you don’t even need use soap after the scrub. It’s cleansing enough as it is, plus the hemp oil leaves your skin extremely moisturized. It’s like a 3-in-1 scrub. Clean, scrub, and moisturize.
Directions: Mix together all ingredients and store in a mason jar. Use the scrub once daily. You can start from the feet up, rubbing in circular motions. Avoid water while scrubbing, and make sure not to get water in your mason jar, this will melt the sugar. Once you’ve scrubbed you can let it sit on the skin for a couple minutes before rinsing, or you can rinse right away depending on how much time you have! That’s it! Your skin will thank you for this one.
Shiny Hair Hemp Mask
This hair mask will leave your hair feeling luscious, full of body, and extremely moisturized. It’s particularly effective for those with brittle, dry, broken hair. I do this mask once a week to maintain my curly, dry mane.
The egg works as a binder and provides proteins and shine. The peppermint essential oil helps stimulate hair growth by drawing circulation to the hair follicles. Plus peppermint is super energizing, so it will wake you up and help the hair to feel fresh and clean. The coconut oil adds extra moisture and shine to this hair mask. It’s a great way to revitalize dull hair that has been damaged due to sun exposure, dry/cold atmospheres, chlorine, or too much heat (straighteners, curling irons, etc).
Directions: Whisk all ingredients together in a small bowl, and splash in a few drops of the essential oil. Depending on how much hair you have, you may be able to cut this recipe into ½ or even ¼. Once whisked together you begin to lather it into your dry hair. Begin at the root, and give yourself a nice scalp massage, ensuring the oil is penetrating your hair follicles. Work your way down to the ends and make sure your head is fully covered in the mask. Massage your head for as long as you’d like (what a treat!) and then tie the hair up into a high ponytail. Wrap the head with a towel and leave on for as long as you can! A good starting point is a minimum of 15 minutes. When you’re ready simply rinse the hair with hot water!
My hope is that everyone can start to reap the beauty benefits of hemp. This amazing plant oil is fully natural, extremely healing, and nothing short of a miracle! For me, it has been a blessing that has brought life back to my dull, acne filled complexion and I hope it can do the same for others suffering from skin issues.
