Rosin: A Cleaner Concentrate
More and more cannabis consumers are starting to use cannabis concentrates rather than smoking flowers, and the newest option on the market is called Rosin. Rosin is a solventless concentrate, made using a technique that utilizes heat and pressure to extract cannabinoids from the marijuana plant. It is unique because it does not involve the use of foreign substances like propane or butane in the extraction process, which results in a product that is guaranteed to be free of any residual chemicals.
The Advantage of Rosin
Whereas other concentrates like Butane Hash Oil (known as BHO) use chemistry to extract THC and other cannabinoids from the plant, rosin is made by a purely mechanical process. The finished product is essentially the same, but BHO can sometimes retain some of the chemicals used in the extraction process, while rosin will never have that issue because there are no additives involved at any stage of the process.
The Rosin Extraction Process
The process of making rosin is actually very simple, so much so that anyone can make rosin at home with a few simple household objects. As a matter of fact, people have been making their own rosin at home for years, and it is only recently that large-scale extract producers have begun to emulate the process for commercial production.
To make your own home-made rosin, you’ll need:
- A hair straightener
- Parchment paper
- Safety gloves
- Your favourite strain of cannabis flowers
Directions: Fold a sheet of parchment paper in half, and place your buds in the middle. Then press the paper and buds into the hair dryer, applying increasing pressure and the sticky, golden rosin should begin to bubble out. Once extracted, the rosin will stick to the parchment paper, where it can be scraped off once dry; putting the parchment in the freezer will help make this easier. And that’s it! A solvent-free cannabis concentrate you can make in your kitchen in a matter of minutes.
Industrial Rosin Production
For those who prefer to leave the extraction to the professionals, medical-grade rosin is becoming more readily available all the time. Extract producers have taken to building industrial-grade presses that are able to extract rosin from flowers at very low temperatures using literal tons of pressure. This low-temperature process is yields a high-quality product by preserving terpenes, the natural oils that give cannabis strains their particular taste and aroma. In order to achieve these results with other methods, producers need to put the product through lengthy and often complicated purging process to remove any residual solvents before it is safe to consume. With rosin, the whole extraction procedure is faster, simpler and safer.
Whether you’re a curious consumer, or a seasoned enthusiast, The Wealth Shop has a variety of rosin extracts now on its shelves. And if you’re interested in making your own, the staff is happy to point you in the direction of a strain that’s best-suited for that, too!
